Braddock News - Old AdsFrom the late 1880s until well after WWII the Braddock shopping area grew in size and scope. Manufacturing, commerce, banking, river and rail trade, and home building in Braddock boomed.
Movie houses, department stores, banks, hotels, real estate offices, jewelers and haberdashers were interwoven among the taverns and pool halls. Like bees in a hive the machines of commerce worked in synch with those of the mills. There was little reason to leave the area, as precious few retail goods or food stuffs found elsewhere could compete with the bounty of the local community marketplace. Between the mid 1920s and 1960, annual commercial business sales volume increased from $12 million per year to $40 million, and the number of businesses in the area increased from approximately 200 to more than 760.
These advertisements from the Braddock News revive the memories of those thriving businesses.
